Our Mission & Vison
Goal of the project is to bring the Sail Structure of the submarine ex-USS JACKSONVILLE (SSN699) to the downtown Jacksonville Naval Museum for advancement of education and to honor the regions active duty military and veterans, past and present.
Our Mission
Bring The Sail 2 Jax is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the USS Jacksonville (SSN-699) by bringing one of its most iconic surviving components—the submarine's sail—home to the city whose name she proudly carried throughout nearly four decades of distinguished naval service.
Our mission extends beyond preserving a historic artifact. We are creating a permanent place where veterans, military families, students, residents, and visitors can gather to honor those who served, celebrate Jacksonville's proud naval heritage, and inspire future generations through education and remembrance
Our Vision
We envision the USS Jacksonville's sail standing proudly alongside the historic USS Orleck at the Jacksonville Naval Museum, creating one of the most distinctive naval heritage destinations in the United States.
Together, these two historic vessels will tell the remarkable story of America's Navy—from the power of surface warfare to the silent strength of the submarine force—while honoring the thousands of Sailors who dedicated their lives to defending our nation.
As one of only a select number of preserved submarine sail memorials in the country, the exhibit will become a lasting symbol of service, sacrifice, innovation, and Jacksonville's enduring relationship with the United States Navy.
Bringing Home a Piece of Jacksonville's Legacy
Imagine standing beneath the towering sail of a nuclear-powered submarine that once silently protected our nation around the globe. Soon, that experience could become a reality on Jacksonville's downtown riverfront.
As the only U.S. Navy submarine ever named for Jacksonville, the USS Jacksonville holds a special place in our city's history. Preserving her sail ensures that her story—and the stories of the officers and Sailors who served aboard her—will continue to inspire future generations long after the submarine herself has completed her final voyage.
Rather than allowing this remarkable piece of naval history to disappear, Bring The Sail 2 Jax is working to transform it into a permanent public memorial that honors service while strengthening our community's connection to its military heritage.
Why the Sail Matters
The sail is the submarine's most recognizable feature. Rising above the hull, it served as the command center while surfaced and supports many of the vessel's essential systems, including periscopes, communication masts, antennas, and access hatches.
While the submarine itself cannot be preserved intact, the sail remains a powerful symbol of the USS Jacksonville and the thousands of submariners who proudly served aboard her. Preserving this iconic structure allows future generations to experience a tangible connection to the courage, professionalism, and quiet dedication of America's Silent Service.
A Landmark Worth Visiting
The addition of the USS Jacksonville's sail will create an inspiring new centerpiece for the Jacksonville Naval Museum.
Displayed beside the USS Orleck, the memorial will offer visitors a rare opportunity to experience two distinct chapters of American naval history in one location—surface warfare and undersea operations.
The completed exhibit will serve as:
- A permanent tribute to the officers and Sailors of USS Jacksonville.
- A destination for veterans, reunions, memorial ceremonies, and military commemorations.
- An educational resource for schools, youth organizations, and families.
- A unique waterfront attraction that enhances Jacksonville's cultural and tourism landscape.
- One of only a handful of preserved submarine sail memorials in the United States.
Inspiring Future Generations
History is most meaningful when it can be experienced firsthand.
Standing beneath the USS Jacksonville's sail will allow visitors to better understand the technology, teamwork, and commitment required to operate one of the world's most capable fast-attack submarines.
Future educational exhibits will explore submarine life, Cold War history, nuclear propulsion, undersea warfare, and the extraordinary dedication of the men who served beneath the sea—ensuring their legacy continues to educate and inspire for decades to come.
Strengthening Jacksonville
This project represents more than preserving a historic artifact—it is an investment in Jacksonville's future.
A larger and more engaging museum experience will encourage tourism, increase repeat visitation, support nearby businesses, expand educational programming, and reinforce Jacksonville's reputation as one of America's premier Navy cities.
Together, the USS Orleck and the USS Jacksonville's sail will create a destination unlike any other in Florida—a place where history is preserved, service is honored, and our community's naval heritage is celebrated every day.
