Our Mission

Goal of the project is to bring the Sail Structure of the submarine ex-USS JACKSONVILLE (SSN699) to the downtown Jacksonville Naval Museum for advancement of education and to honor the regions active duty military and veterans, past and present.

Bringing Home a Piece of Jacksonville's Legacy

Imagine standing beneath the towering sail of a nuclear-powered submarine that once silently protected our nation around the globe. Soon, that experience could become a reality in the heart of downtown Jacksonville.

The effort to relocate the sail from the ex-USS JACKSONVILLE (SSN-699) to the Jacksonville Naval Museum is more than a preservation project—it is an opportunity to create a powerful new landmark that celebrates our city's deep naval heritage while inspiring future generations.

As the only U.S. Navy submarine ever named after Jacksonville, the USS JACKSONVILLE holds a unique place in our community's history. By preserving her sail alongside the historic USS ORLECK, visitors will experience two distinct chapters of America's naval story—surface warfare and undersea warfare—at one remarkable destination.

A Landmark Worth Visiting

The addition of the submarine sail would create an iconic centerpiece for the museum, giving residents and tourists alike another compelling reason to visit Jacksonville's waterfront. It would provide a striking backdrop for ceremonies, educational programs, veterans events, school field trips, and community gatherings while honoring the thousands of Sailors who served aboard the USS JACKSONVILLE throughout her 40 years of distinguished service.

Inspiring Future Generations

History comes alive when people can stand beside it.

Students, scouts, military families, and visitors will gain a greater appreciation for the sacrifices, technology, and teamwork required aboard a fast-attack submarine. Interactive exhibits surrounding the sail can tell the story of the Cold War, undersea operations, nuclear propulsion, and the courageous men who served beneath the waves.

By preserving this historic artifact, we ensure that the lessons of service, dedication, and innovation continue to educate generations to come.

Strengthening Jacksonville

The project also represents an investment in Jacksonville itself.

A larger, more engaging museum experience helps attract tourism, encourages repeat visits, supports nearby businesses, and reinforces Jacksonville's identity as one of America's premier Navy cities. As the museum grows, so does its ability to host special events, educational programming, veterans ceremonies, and civic celebrations that enrich the entire community.

Together, the USS ORLECK and the USS JACKSONVILLE sail would create a destination unlike any other in Florida—a place where history is preserved, service is honored, and the story of Jacksonville's Navy heritage can be experienced firsthand.

Be Part of History

Projects like this become reality because communities choose to invest in their history.

Whether through donations, sponsorships, volunteering, or simply sharing the story, every contribution helps bring the USS JACKSONVILLE home. Together, we can preserve this remarkable symbol of service and create a lasting tribute that will inspire pride in Jacksonville for generations to come.
